It is the Big Dog Daddy’s birthday! In honor of the one and only Toby Keith, we have compiled a list of our favorite songs by the man himelf.
Now, there are a lot of them. Toby just keeps pumping out records. But there are definitely some notable tracks we wanted to highlight.
Should’ve Been A Cowboy
How could we not start with this? This song along crowned Toby of the kings of ’90s country.
I mean have you ever heard ol’ Marshal Dillon say, ‘Miss Kitty, have you ever thought of runnin’ away’? Didn’t think so.
There’s a finite list of songs you can put on the aux that everyone will raise a solo cup and sing along to. This is one of those songs.
A Little Too Late
If for nothing else, this song make the list solely because of its music video. If you haven’t watched it…finish reading this article later and do yourself a favor:
Toby undoubtedly has some of the most entertaining music videos out there, but this one stands out—which is saying a lot.
I Wanna Talk About Me
The perfect karaoke song does exist (but you gotta ad-lib this song to do it properly).
I Wanna Talk About Me is comedic genius: it stereotypes women in the worst ways possible, yet still gets women to love the song. A true masterpiece.
Ain’t It Just Like You
On a more serious note, this song cuts deep.
Baby, you must think my heart is a revolving door The way you come and go as you please I don't know if I should give up or try Or get down on my knees
Damn, Toby, okay.
This is genuinely a beautiful yet painful song that is far too real for many. It’s full of great metaphors, and is just upbeat enough to keep tears from watering down your draft when someone a*shole plays it over the jukebox.
It Works For Me
Another serious note, this is not so much a song as a story. Toby talks about the ‘simple’ country life: its ups and downs, the people that live it, and the people who hate it.
It is probably his most underrated song, consistently overlooked in rankings of his music.
I Love This Bar
Another iconic karaoke song, I Love This Bar is one of Toby’s hallmark works.
Nothing can fix the mood of a barroom like this song. Bringing everyone together, and slapping a smile on everyone’s face.
We could go on for a long time about Toby’s music. Honorable mentions: American Soldier, Happy Birthday America, Made in America, and Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue (we couldn’t just choose one of his partiotic songs).
There are few people more undoubtedly American than Toby Keith, and few singers more true to their sound over the decades.
God Bless America, and God Bless Toby Keith. We wish the Big Dog a speedy recovery.
